Inspiring design books to add to your wishlist

I’m doing a round up of some of my favourite (and most wanted) design books for lovers of textiles, interiors and surface pattern design. To make sure you get something you actually want. you can share this with your family & friends next time it’s gifting season or your birthday!

1. A Life in Pattern by Anna Spiro
   One of Australia’s most loved and well known interior designers, Anna Spiro also has a range of stunning interior textiles. Her style is original, bold and colourful. This book will not disappoint, it’s a visual feast for your eyes and soul.

2. The Book of Printed Fabrics: From the 16th Century Until Today by Aziza Gril-Mariotte
   From the publishing powerhouse that is Taschen, well known for their stunning art books, this one is a masterpiece. A two-volume set, with equally beautiful covers, takes you through centuries of textiles. Nearly 900 pieces reproduced here for your viewing pleasure. A collector’s item for sure!

3. Bloom Wild: A Free-Spirited Guide to Decorating With Floral Patterns by Bari J. Ackerman
   If you love pattern and florals you can’t go past this book, from textile designer and artist Bari J Ackerman. Her style is a curated maximalist, with lots of layers and adding in plenty of DIY touches too.

4. The Flower Room: Timeless Interiors Inspired by Nature by Charlotte Coote
   Renowned Australian interior designer Charlotte Coote shows how to bring the colours, patterns and textures of nature into your home. Bringing timeless and contemporary interiors to life, her grounding principles are “that good design could fuel your energy and enhance your life. I love the idea of making a space better, adapting it to enrich the lives of the people who intend to use them.” Yes please!

5. Complete Pattern Directory: 1500 Designs from All Ages and Cultures by Elizabeth Wilhide
   An excellent resource fro surface pattern designers, browse through the ages of design styles for endless inspiration.

6. De Gournay: Hand-Painted Interiors by Claud Gurney
   The classic artwork of De Gournay is timeless, this book

7. Redouté. Book of Flowers: The Complete Plates by H. Walter Lack & Werner Dressendörfer
   Watercolour artist and master of botanical floral illustrations Pierre-Joseph Redouté (1759-1840) is celebrated in this collection of some of his finest colour engravings. If you just love flowers, or love to paint them, then this book is for you.

8. Textilepedia: The Complete Fabric Guide by Fashionary
   Not so much an inspiring book, but a comprehensive guide fro anyone interested in textiles and technical knowledge. I love this sort of thing, maybe from my uni days of mixing printing ink and dyes, I believe having a better understanding of my substrates informs my work and my design practice.
